Starting a coffee shop?: Free Cafe Setup cost Calculator

Ang Mo Kio is joining the bandwagon of neighbourhood estates where more cafes are sprouting up just this year alone. Rainbow Cottage is one of the newest players in Ang Mo Kio. Opened less than 6 months ago, the 20 seater cafe focuses on rainbow theme, be it their food or beverages. The family-friendly café also provides a kids’ corner for young children, where the toy kitchen and utensils gives the little tots a chance to experiment cooking.

Cakes, waffles and gelatos are the main attraction for food sold in Rainbow Cottage, which are made in-house. Main courses such as pastas and wraps are available but choices are limited. Espresso-based coffee and Arizonan tea make up the beverage list to complement the food menu.

Rainbow Cottage offers three types of rainbow cakes: rainbow jar cake, paddle pop cheesecake and rainbow cake. As their rainbow jar cake was sold out when we were there, we had paddle pop cheesecake and blue velvet cake instead.

All cakes were served on a wooden board with the Rainbow Cottage logo, which was rather unique. The paddle pop cheesecake ($7.50) is currently the best seller at Rainbow Cottage. At first glance, it looked like a huge slice of coloured cheesecake and you might think it tasted like your usual new York cheesecake. It turned out that the paddle pop cheesecake tasted like it was flavoured with coconut, which was rather pleasant. The cake was soft and creamy too.

The blue velvet cake ($6) had a different take from the usual red velvet cake. Rainbow Cottage’s velvet cake went light with cream cheese and the cake was firm and moist with a slight hint of cocoa taste. It can be easily polished off at one go especially when paired with coffee.

We had a flat white ($4.20) and long black ($3) to go with the cakes.  The long black tasted fresh and well-roasted at the first sip, however it left quite a strong sour aftertaste. The flat white was great though and complemented my velvet cake perfectly on a lovely Saturday morning.

To sum it up, Rainbow Cottage is a child-friendly neighbourhood café and is a good option for those staying in the Ang Mo Kio area to enjoy some cakes and coffee with their families and friends.
