My friends and I went to this very "old" cafe in Dakota Crescent -Tian Kee & Co. The shop space used to be an old provision shop for 54 years before the current owners took over and turned it into a café. It’s great that they have managed to keep the originality of the previous shop as much as they could. I love the old signboard, the metal gates and the light bulbs above the display counter. Really a reminisce of my childhood days.

From the pics, you can see that there is no air-conditioning; Tian Kee is a little charming café with a rustic feel. We were there after lunch at about 3plus. It was pretty quiet and there were about half a dozen customers or so. Although this café is away from the working enclave, it has its own unique flavour that makes people want to drive over for a cuppa. Dakota Crescent is very peaceful and there is nothing there but Tian Kee.
Their menu is varied. As I wasn’t hungry, I just tried one of their cakes and pop soda and my friends had iced chocolate and coffee. I like their rainbow cheese cake ($7.50). It’s not the typical sponge cake that most cafes are selling and the cheese is light. Coffee was average and iced chocolate was thick and good.

Most of all I like the soda pop (“pop qui” in Teochew), it is so old school and surprisingly refreshingly good. Can’t forget the time when I was staying at my grandma’s shophouse and I will pop over to one of the neighbour’s house at the next street to buy one of those pop sodas in bottles. I can’t remember if I paid 30 cents or 50 cents for it but those were the good old after-school days.

Most likely, the ratio of coffee to water and the way the coffee is extracted are to blame. If you fix these, your coffee might taste better.

There is no substitute for Turkish coffee's thick, rich flavor because it is produced in a unique way using an Ibrik, a copper pot that most people don't own.
