Coffee Capital: Keeping a Lid on

Melbourne is one of the undisputed coffee capital in the world. In fact, many of our cafes here in Singapore is inspired, and modelled after the cafes in Melbourne. The third wave coffee culture, is still evidently strong in both countries, as we consume high amounts of coffee daily.

One of the many things to notice about the Baristas over in Melbourne, is the level of professionalism, and prestige it holds. They are well dressed, and seemingly serious about their coffee. Focusing on the various brewing methods of the coffee, their vast coffee knowledge, and their coffee art; they are all rounders in terms of coffee.

However, one observation of most of the Melbourne cafes; is that they do not serve you your cup of coffee with a lid on. It is usually given to you with the lid off. When we approached one of the barista, asking about the lids, they told us that it was because of the high traffic of customers. That requires them to hand out coffee faster, and with the lid off; consumers are able to add sugar to their coffee at themselves, before putting the lid on. This way, it saves time and the effort of putting on and off the lid, if the customers wants to add sugar to their coffee.

This is vastly different from the well packed coffee, with their lids on tightly, in Singapore. We maybe fast paced city, however when it comes to coffee; we have a lot of catching up to do.
