Can Pregnant Women Drink Coffee?

While it is known that caffeine cannot be broken down by the fetus when it crosses the placenta.

Beverages, containing Caffeine (such as coffee, tea, and cola) can be consumed safely during pregnancy, but only in moderation.

Animal studies suggest that excessive caffeine consumption may be linked to miscarriage, low birth weight.

When you're expecting a child, you don't have to give up caffeine completely. Research has found that moderate amounts are safe as long as a few precautions are taken.

According to current guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and other experts, pregnant women can consume up to 200 milligrams of caffeine per day (the equivalent of one 12-ounce cup of coffee).

However, keep in mind that other caffeine sources (such as energy drinks, power bars, and chocolate) should be included in your 200 milligrams daily limit.

More than that may increase the risk of miscarriage slightly, though the evidence is inconclusive. However, because caffeine can pass through the placental barrier, most doctors recommend sticking to the 200-milligram limit.

What if you don't like coffee but enjoy a cup of tea in the morning? The amount of caffeine in each serving varies depending on the substance, an 8 ounces of brewed tea contains 48 mg of caffeine.

Remember that caffeine can also be found in chocolate and soda.

While it is not necessary to abstain from caffeine entirely while pregnant, you should be mindful of how much you consume as a precaution.

About US | OCM Profile

OCM (OnCoffeeMakers.com) was started in 2007 with the first webpage about coffee machines. And for a number of years, we focused on helping people find their desired coffee machine (we still are helping folks with that! So, if you are looking for coffee machines for office or restaurants - check out the link).

In 2010, we started getting enquiries on restaurant marketing and we start to help food and beverage brands with their marketing. Below are campaigns and events that we have done over the years:

OCM's Events: F&B Industry events by or with OCM

Check out this restaurant marketing guide to learn more about the many campaigns and companies we have worked with.

Since then, we have also created many marketing workshops and classes for the F&B industry. Many of these modules are still running in tertiary institutions such as Temasek Polytechnic Skillsfuture Academy and also ITE College East COC classes, below are some snippets of our lectures and workshops:
