How to Get the Perfect Cup of Coffee

How does one get the perfect cup of coffee? Believe it or not, coffee experts and aficionados have spent years trying to answer that same question. Some have even spent their entire lives trying to make the most blissful and delightful cup of brewed coffee known to humankind.

Brewing coffee is a science, and we should thank those who have spent years figuring out what factors greatly influences the taste of the coffee.

There are many variables involved when it comes to brewing the perfect cup of coffee. This article aims to list down these crucial variables to help you not just to brew coffee or just a hot cup of coffee, but to brew a great tasting cup of coffee in your own home.

Coffee Maker

It does not matter what type of coffee maker you’re using, whether you’re using a manual drip coffee maker, electric coffee maker, a percolator, or a French press.

However, if you’re using an electric coffee maker, the saying, “You get what you paid for,” is true in most cases. If you’re using the cheapest electric coffee maker, don’t expect it to brew coffee that tastes as great as coffee brewed with other electric coffee makers that have a higher price tag.

Coffee Beans

Similarly, coffee beans play a crucial factor as well. However, I can’t recommend the blend and roast, which is most suitable for you, since we all have different preferences.

Therefore, the best advice that I can give is to try out all the different blends and roasts that are readily available in your area. Learn the subtle differences in taste, and from there, you can find the one that is perfect for you.

Only you know which blend would brew you, your perfect cup of coffee.

Store your coffee beans in an airtight container and away from sunlight to keep them fresh.

Furthermore, to get a fresh cup of coffee, grind a small batch of your beans immediately right before you brew. You’ll be surprised at the difference between a freshly ground brew from brewing a batch of pre-ground coffee beans.

Coffee Grinder

The coffee grinder is often overlooked by most people, but it also plays a very crucial part in getting the perfect cup of coffee. The quality of the grind greatly influences the quality of the coffee.

Getting an even and consistent grind maximizes flavor, since the size and consistency of the grinds influences how the extraction process plays out.

Therefore, to brew a perfect cup of coffee, try to invest in a good grinder. Conical burr grinders are recommended, since these grind coffee beans evenly and consistently and can grind coffee beans into any size, depending on the type of coffee maker being used.

Different types of coffee makers need different types of grind sizes. As a general rule, use a very fine grind for Turkish coffee, fine grind for espresso machines, medium grind for automatic drip coffee makers and manual drip coffee makers, coarse grind for French press coffee, and coarser grind for percolators.

Water

Water is used to extract the flavor and essence of the coffee grounds during the coffee extraction process. Therefore, the quality of the water also influences the quality of the coffee.

This is why some coffee makers have built-in water filters. This feature is not there to increase the price of the coffee maker and maximize profits, but to remove the impurities in the water that have a negative impact on the taste of the coffee.

Furthermore, these water filters reduce the accumulation of mineral deposits in the coffee maker, which ultimately affects the performance of the machine.

To put it simply, when it comes to brewing coffee, fresh water is all that’s needed. Try using bottled water the next time you brew if you’ve been using tap water to brew your coffee, and see if there’s a difference in taste. Remember, coffee is 99% water. Therefore, it would be wise to use the freshest water available.

Furthermore, the trick to brewing a great tasting cup of coffee is to heat the water to the ideal brewing temperature, which is almost at boiling point or 195° to 205° F.

If you don’t have a food thermometer handy, bring the water up to a boil, then let it cool down for a few moments. Temperature is important for that perfect cup of coffee.

Coffee Filter

If you’re using an automatic drip or manual drip coffee maker, what kind of coffee filter do you use? If you’re using paper filters, try to invest in a gold tone filter.

Gold tone filters are reusable and if well-maintained, can last for years. These reusable filters not just eliminate the need to stock up on paper filters, but also help maximize the flavor of the coffee.

Paper filters, especially bleached and dyed filters, have a negative effect on the taste of the coffee. Furthermore, paper filters tend to leave a papery or cardboard-like taste, as well as absorb the coffee oils; thus not able to maximize flavor.

Gold tone filters do not react chemically with the hot water during the extraction process, and do not absorb the coffee oils that are extracted by the hot water.

Therefore, everything passes through, except the coffee grounds, giving richer and more flavorful coffee. Ultimately, a gold tone filter helps maximize flavor, and it will keep you enjoying great tasting cups of coffee for years.

Hopefully, these helpful tips can get you on your way to brewing the best cups of coffee you’ve ever made in your own home, or your own perfect cup of coffee...
