Rainforest Alliance Coffee

Rainforest Alliance Coffee

A few big names in coffee/F&B business for a deed that has nothing to do with coffee -preserving our rainforest.

The Sustainability Standard Setters award given by the Rainforest Alliance to companies that preserve rainforest, conserve biodiversity and foster sustainable livelihoods through responsible business practices.

For 2011, the honorees are:

Costa coffee, one of the biggest and fastest growing coffee chain in UK. They are committed to buying all of its beans from Rainforest Alliance Certified Farms.

Kenco Coffee Company, which recently belongs to Kraft is also trying to get all its coffee from Rainforest Alliance Certified Farms.

Mars Inc, the company that sells Flavia Coffee machine is planning on using sustainable cocoa for its chocolate product. It hopes to source 100 percent of its cocoa from sustainable origins by 2020.

For folks that have watched the "thin months", sustainable is a word that is important not only for the next generation but the farmers that are growing the coffee beans as well.

This ensures that while we are happily drinking our gourmet coffee, the coffee farmers would be able to have at least 3 hot meals a day.

So, this is an award and a mission that would benefit the greater good of the farming community for coffee.
